Post Operative Instructions after Extractions

  • Be careful not to bite your cheek, lip, or tongue
  • Do not eat while your mouth is numb
  • Do not drink liquids through a straw (The sucking action may loosen the blood clot and prevent proper healing)

You will be asked to bite on a damp piece of gauze for 30-45 minutes after you leave the office. After the pack is removed you may have some oozing. If so, fold a piece of damp gauze and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. Repeat as needed until the bleeding stops. At night you should put a towel over your pillow case to protect it.

Blood Clot

  • You don't want to disturb the extraction site so avoid spitting, swishing, and gargling
  • Avoid smoking and alcoholic beverages
  • Don't clean the teeth for the rest of the day
  • Limit strenuous activity for 24 hours

Pain and Swelling

  • Apply cold compresses 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Repeat
  • Use medication as prescribed

  • Drink lots of liquids
  • Eat soft, nutritious foods
  • Avoid hot liquids
  • Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth

Follow up

  • If you have sutures they will need to be removed in about a week
